A Vestas blade has broken off a turbine at a 213MW Swedish wind farm owned by British investment trust TRIG.

The broken turbine and scattered remnants of the blade were discovered on Wednesday by a local resident, according to local media.

The incident occurred at the Jädraås wind farm in Gävleborg County, an area that sits on Sweden’s Baltic coastline facing Finland.

The wind farm was commissioned in 2013 and boasts 66 Vestas V112 turbines, each with a capacity of 3.2MW.

A photo published by public radio station Sveriges Radio clearly shows that it is a Vestas turbine the blade has broken from.

The wind farm was bought in 2019 by TRIG – ‘The Renewables Infrastructure Group’ – but is serviced by Renewable Energy Systems (RES).

In a statement to Recharge, a RES spokesperson confirmed that there "has been damage to one of the turbine blades" at the Jädraås wind farm.

"The safety of our personnel and the public is always our highest priority and while there have been no injuries, we have cordoned off the area as a precaution and are collaborating with the relevant authorities.

"A thorough investigation is now underway."

Thomas Mannelqvist, a senior operations and maintenance engineer at RES, is quoted by Swedish public broadcaster SVT as saying the blade break incident seemed strange as there have been low wind speeds in recent weeks.

Vestas was also contacted for comment.
