Vestas will take over an LM Wind Power blade factory in Poland in a move claimed as a strategic fit by both wind players.

The factory in Goleniow near Szczecin in northern Poland will join Vestas’ manufacturing operations after an agreement to pay an undisclosed sum to LM Wind Power, which is owned by its rival global wind OEM GE Vernova.

The plant already makes onshore wind blades for use on Vestas turbines under LM Wind Power, which supplies third parties as well as its parent group.

Denmark-based Vestas said Goleniow will continue to supply its onshore fleet, including the giant V172-7.2 MW turbines that are its largest on land.

Both companies said the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, suits their strategies. LM Wind Power CEO Hanif Mashal said: “This proposed transaction is a strategic move for LM Wind Power and GE Vernova [that] would enable us to simplify our business and reinvest capital into our core European Union manufacturing facilities producing GE Vernova wind products to better serve our loyal customer base in EU.”

Poland has emerged as an increasingly key growth market for wind power both on- and offshore, not least thanks to the nation’s dash to reduce dependency on Russian energy.

The government is moving to ease highly restrictive turbine distance rules that previously effectively ruled out the use of latest large models. The Polish Wind Energy Association previously told Recharge that change would double potential onshore deployment to 41GW by 2040.
In offshore wind Poland is now a fully-fledged global growth market, with big industrial plans that Vestas itself is a key part of. The Danish group has opened a 15MW nacelle plant in Szczecin and has said it could follow with an offshore blade factory if orders materialise.
