Spanish renewable energy giant Iberdrola has awarded a contract for the transportation and installation of monopile foundations for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind project to Dutch contractor Van Oord.

The contract also includes the supply and installation of inter-array cable at the 476MW wind farm in the German part of the Baltic Sea that is slated to be fully operational by the end of 2024.

“Iberdrola is one of the leading developers contributing to the energy transition by investing in offshore wind projects around the globe – in Germany, our Baltic Hub will have an installed capacity of 826 MW by the end of 2024,” Iberdrola country manager for Germany, Iris Stempfle, said.

“Tapping into the expertise of Van Oord yet again makes us confident that Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm will be delivered as planned.”

Iberdrola by the end of 2026 plans to have 1.1GW of installed capacity in the German Baltic Sea.

For the installation of the 50 foundations at Baltic Eagle, Van Oord is deploying its 8,000-ton heavy lift installation vessel Svanen which already has installed more than 700 foundations across Europe.

Offshore works at Baltic Eagle are slated to start in 2023.

Van Oord’s cable laying vessel Nexus and trencher Dig-It will be deployed for the inter-array cable laying. Due to challenging soil conditions in the Baltic Sea, the trencher vessel will be customised to ensure proper execution of the cable laying works.

“We are very pleased to be working with Iberdrola again, this time on the Baltic Eagle project in the German Baltic Sea. Combining the installation of foundations and the supply and laying of cables will ensure efficient project execution,” Van Oord managing director Arnoud Kuis said.

Iberdrola last week has also sealed a contract with the Navantia and Windar shipyards in northern Spain to build a factory for XXL monopiles at the Navantia yard in Fene, A Coruna. The plant is part of a previously announced framework agreement between the utility and the shipyard worth up to €400m ($472m) by 2025.
