A former senior executive with Kontiki Winds said the early-stage developer could have “thrived under different market conditions” after it was shut by Norwegian parent group Havfram.

Havfram said late last week it would close Kontiki and focus solely on its offshore wind transport and installation operations.

The company said the decision came “after a comprehensive assessment of its overall business strategy”.

Rick Campbell, Kontiki’s VP for offshore wind development, said on Linkedin: “The challenges surrounding our industry at the moment are well known and felt most sharply in origination and development. This has contributed to this difficult decision. Under different market conditions I’ve no doubt we would have thrived.”

News of Kontiki’s closure came just after it announced it would pull out of its partnership with RWE and NTE in Norway’s Utsira Nord offshore wind tender.

Kontiki Winds emerged after 2020 when Havfram announced a corporate restructuring that split the company’s activities, with Kontiki focusing on development.

The Havfram Wind installation business has signed deals with some of the world’s biggest offshore developers to install turbines at projects including Orsted’s Hornsea 3.
