Suzlon will supply wind turbines for large-scale green power production at Indian steel plants in what’s claimed as the nation’s largest wind power commercial & industrial supply deal to date.

The wind OEM will deliver 400MW of turbines to the renewables unit of BC Jindal, one of India’s largest conglomerates.

Jindal Renewables will deploy the 3.15MW turbines as captive power suppliers for steel plants in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, in the Koppal region of Karnataka.

Suzlon claimed the contract is the biggest yet in wind power in the Indian C&I sector, seen as an increasingly important segment as India pursues decarbonisation across its industrial landscape.

JP Chalasani, Suzlon CEO said: “Decarbonisation of the steel sector is a critical area that requires intervention if we want to realise India's renewable energy targets.”

Suzlon is among a clutch of domestic and foreign players vying to lead India’s wind power boom, which the government hopes will see 122GW in place by 2032 up from 47GW now.

Recharge reported yesterday that Suzlon is tipped as one of the contenders in a race for contracts of up to 5GW said to be on offer from utility giant Tata Power.
