Siemens Gamesa has landed a deal to build and operate a 500MW wind farm in Egypt near the Gulf of Suez.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly today witnessed the signing of a supply deal between the European turbine-making giant and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, the government announced on Facebook.

The agreement will see Siemens Gamesa build, finance and operate the project, according to the announcement.

This will help the government achieve its goals of reaching 42% of renewable energy in its power mix by 2030, and 65% by 2040, said the government.

Ayman Saad, CEO of Siemens Gamesa in Egypt, said that the company has a strong track record in the country, highlighting its contribution of 1.5GW of wind power capacity there to date.

“We are enthusiastic about this new agreement and eager to expand our renewable energy footprint in the country,” he said.

Egypt last year signed deals earmarking more than $40bn of investments for renewable energy and green hydrogen as part of a 10-year development plan for the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
News of the deal comes the same day Recharge revealed that Chinese turbine making-giant Windey will supply turbines for two wind farms totalling 1.1GW in nearby Saudi Arabia.
