Siemens Gamesa chief: 'still no orders' for relaunched 4.X wind turbine

Order revival 'taking longer than expected' and key to onshore will be bringing 5.X to market later this year, Siemens Energy CEO Bruch says

Siemens Gamesa still hasn’t received any orders for its 4.X wind turbine, eight months after the manufacturer relaunched the troubled onshore machine, said Christian Bruch, CEO of parent group Siemens Energy.

“In the onshore sector, for the 4.X, there are no orders booked yet. We are continuing with the project development of the 4.X turbine,” Bruch said during a call on the German energy giant’s latest financial results.

“We always said there would be a very limited number, also to compensate for the under-utilisation in the factories. This is taking longer than we expected.”

Siemens Gamesa in recent years has posted heavy losses in the wake of quality issues afflicting its 4.X and 5.X onshore wind turbine platforms that forced it to pause the sale of those turbines.

When bringing the 4MW platform back to the market in September 2024 after the quality issues were fixed, Bruch had already said he initially only expected modest sales.

“We have always said our goal with onshore is to mitigate risk, and that's what we are doing,” he said now.

“The issues we had to address with the 4.X turbine that went on sale were issues we had to address anyway, so that the existing fleet would receive the quality improvement it needs. This isn't a new development, but rather a solution to the quality issues.”

“The decisive factor for onshore will be the 5.X later, when we bring it to market in 2025.”
