Siemens Gamesa is celebrating the first-ever installation of its SG 14-236 14MW offshore wind turbine at an Orsted project in Taiwan.

The European turbine-making giant announced today that the installation at the Orsted Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind project was the “first-ever installation of the SG 14-236 wind turbine globally.”

“We are proud to see it happen in Taiwan – a growing hub for offshore wind innovation.”

Orsted commenced construction of the 920MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farm in February. It expects to complete offshore installation by the end of 2025 and achieve full grid connection next year.

The project will feature 66 of the Siemens Gamesa 14MW turbines. The turbines are being transported on the Wind Maker, a wind installation vessel built by Cadeler, which can transport up to four turbines per trip.

Siemens Gamesa had only previously installed a prototype of the turbine, which has 115-metre blades and a rating of up to 15MW with power boost, at the Danish national test centre for large wind turbines in Osterild in 2023.

The turbine is set to compete for orders against the V236-15.0MW flagship machine produced by Danish rival Vestas.

Last year, Siemens Gamesa signed a master supply agreement for 63 of the SG 14-236 DD machines for a 945MW project in the German Baltic Sea.
Siemens Gamesa last month finished installation of the world’s most powerful installed wind turbine, a mammoth 21.5MW offshore wind prototype at the Osterild test centre. The OEM has however been tight-lipped about the SG DD-276 prototype and says it is yet to decide whether it will one day be commercialised.
