Masdar enters renewables-shy Bahrain with 2GW wind pact
Bahrain has paltry amount of green power in its renewables mix currently, aiming to hit 255MW of capacity this year
Emirati green power giant Masdar has entered Bahrain with a deal to explore developing 2GW of wind power projects in the renewables-shy Gulf state.
Masdar inked the deal with Bapco Energies, a semi-autonomous agency within Bahrain's Ministry of Oil and Gas, to jointly explore developing and investing in up to 2GW of wind projects.
This would represent a transformative amount of wind power for the small Gulf state, which has a population of around 1.5 million people.
Bahrain currently has a paltry amount of green power in its energy mix. It aims to hit 255MW of renewables capacity – amounting to 5% of its electricity generation – this year.
Bahrain aims to reduce emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieve net zero by 2060.
“Today marks a significant milestone in Bapco Energies’ pathway towards sustainable energy development,” said its CEO Mark Thomas.
“Our partnership with Masdar demonstrates our commitment towards diversifying the Kingdom of Bahrain’s energy mix to include cleaner energy sources, underscoring our role as leaders in renewable energy development.”
Masdar CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, said the developer will use its “well-established expertise and track record in delivering wind energy projects globally, both onshore and offshore.”
“It is a privilege to be supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain to achieve its net zero ambitions and power a more sustainable future.”
Masdar is aiming for a renewables portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030.
