Indian OEM Suzlon said it has sealed an agreement to supply Indian state power giant NTPC with more than 1GW of turbines, in one of the nation’s biggest ever wind equipment deals.

Suzlon will deliver 1.16GW of its S144 3.15MW turbines to projects being developed in the state of Gujarat by NGEL, the green power subsidiary of NTPC.

As is usual in India, Suzlon will build the projects as well as supply the turbines and carry out post-commissioning O&M.

The order is Suzlon’s first direct sale to NTPC, which via NGEL has entered agreements across India to develop gigascale wind, solar and green hydrogen projects.

Suzlon is on an upswing in its domestic market despite intense competition from local rivals such as Inox and foreign giants including GE Vernova, Vestas and market-leader Envision Energy from China.

The company said the NTPC orders bring its cumulative order book to almost 5GW after being revitalised by sale of the 3MW model.

Suzlon CEO JP Chalasani said: “Achieving India's energy transition targets hinges on participation from utilities of the scale and expertise of NGEL… this project is also the first of many more such transformative projects between the two in the future.”
