An Indian state-owned hydropower giant has put out a call for a partner to develop the country’s first offshore wind projects.

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) recently published a tender for expression of interest for a partner on the development of offshore wind in India.

NHPC currently has an installed capacity of around 7GW. That is overwhelmingly made up of hydropower projects but it is increasingly expanding into solar and wind power too, including offshore wind.

India is looking to kick on with huge offshore wind ambitions in the sector that have so far been unfulfilled.

India has had several false dawns for its offshore wind sector previously. In mid-2022, the country unexpectedly put its foot on the offshore wind accelerator with plans to launch large-scale auctions within months.
Then, in September, it flagged 7.2GW of capacity on offer in an upcoming offshore wind tendering. That includes 4GW earmarked for bidding starting 1 February.

India aims to meet half of its electricity requirements through over 500GW of renewable energy sources by 2030. It is targeting net zero emissions by 2070.
