Chinese turbine maker Goldwind has brought online the Loma Blanca 4 wind farm in Argentina, the latest in a series of developments in the South American country totalling over 350MW of installed capacity.

The 100MW project, part of a four-stage complex in Argentina’s wide-valleyed and windy Chubut province, will now enter a forecast 20-year commercial operation period under a power purchase deal with the Argentine National Electricity Market Management Agency.

The wind farms, equipped with GW 3S smart turbines, are expected to generate some 16 million MWh of power annually once at full power.

“With that large wind power cluster including five projects being developed and constructed at the same time, the project team encountered a lot of challenges during the construction,” said Goldwind.

“Through proactive communications with all related parties, and close work with the construction partners, we were able to overcome the negative impact especially from the pandemic and achieved the final success of all the projects.”

Goldwind began work on the Loma Blanca complex and the 98MW Miramar project, near Buenos Aires, in 2018 with compatriot EPC group Power China after acquiring the wind farms under China’s ‘Belt and Road’ global infrastructure strategy.
The Chinese OEM already has significant capacity up and running at third-party wind farms in Latin America, including projects in Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia and Cuba. It has also signaled its ambitions in the biggest regional market, Brazil, with a big service and replacement deal there
