Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) has closed the acquisition of 100% of developer Wpd’s offshore wind business that was first announced in May, and rebranded the unit Skyborn Renewables.

The infrastructure investor has kept former Wpd Offshore chief executive Achim Berge as CEO of Skyborn, which has a pipeline of more than 30GW (gross) of wind projects in various stages of development, as well as stakes in five projects in Germany, France and Taiwan that are already operating or under construction.

“Skyborn Renewables will combine the team’s experience with GIP’s financial strength and track record of investing in renewables assets to the deployment of offshore wind energy for the benefit of future generations,” Berge said.

“Our mission is to address the global challenges of the climate crisis and energy security.”

Skyborn’s newly appointed management team includes João Metelo as chief investment & financial officer, as well as Morgen Melin and Thomas Karst as co-chief operating officers, with Melin joining in March 2023. Lars Muck has become chief technology officer, and Cathrin Brown general counsel. Each of them has between 12 and 25 years of industry experience.

“GIP identified offshore wind as an important component of the transition to clean, renewable power,” said GIP chairman and CEO Adebayo Ogunlesi.

“The investment in Skyborn is a significant milestone and demonstrates GIP’s commitment to the continued growth of global renewable power generation.”

Skyborn will open an office in Hamburg, Germany.
