Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has ordered wind turbines from GE Vernova for a 760MW wind project in eastern Spain worth more than €700m ($761m).

GE Vernova is slated to deliver 125 of its 6.1-158MW machines for the Maestrazgo cluster of the Teruel wind project.

“This agreement reinforces how we can use our workhorse product strategy to provide our customers with proven technology that allows them to build high-quality, high-performance fleets at scale to meet the demands of the energy transition,” GE Vernova CEO Vic Abate said.

The order is a major victory for GE Vernova over its rival Siemens Gamesa, which has traditionally been strong in Spain due to its Gamesa legacy, but currently isn't selling any turbines in the 5-7MW class due to quality issues at its 4.X and 5.X onshore wind platforms.

Siemens Gamesa in 2022, the last year for which exact ranking data are available, still sold 448MW of wind turbines in Spain compared to GE's 268MW, according to Spanish wind power association AEE. Through the end of that year, Siemens Gamesa had sold a cumulated 15GW in wind turbine capacity in the Iberian country, compared to GE's 4.9GW.

The contract, which was booked by the US turbine maker in Q4 2023, builds on previous agreements through which GE Vernova supplied 490MW to CIP for onshore wind power in Aragon, Spain.

The turbine blades and towers for the Teruel project will be built at factories in central and northern Spain.

"The Maestrazgo cluster is expected to have a very positive socio-economic impact on job creation and on the Aragonese and Valencian economy, but also on the value chain of the entire Spanish wind industry," said Nischal Agarwal, partner at CIP.

"The wind turbines will be manufactured in production plants located in Spain, such as GE Vernova's plant in Castellón and others from different suppliers in Albacete, Burgos and Galicia, where the towers are expected to be manufactured."

The order comes with a 15-year service contract.

Solar order in Turkey

GE Vernova also signed a contract to supply its Flexinverter power station to Kalyon PV for a 157MW solar array in Turkey.

“After having executed several Renewable Energy Resources Zones (YEKA) projects in Turkey, we are now focusing on industries that want to produce captive power at a utility scale for their self-consumption through PV projects, such as Kalyon PV’s solar power plant in Viranşehir, and renewable hybrid projects, including large scale storage,” said Megi Gabriyel, Region Leader Solar & Storage Solutions, Middle East, Africa & Turkey at GE Vernova.
