GE Vernova's 6.1 MW–158m 'workhorse' turbine has been selected by Italy’s IVPC Group to repower five units at its Montefalcone wind farm, the OEM announced today.

This will be the first use of the giant GE Vernova turbine in Italy, with the contract also including engineering support for maintenance. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2025 and the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Repowering wind farms with new or retrofitted higher capacity turbines can significantly increases power production while extending wind farm life.

“Utilising our latest and most powerful onshore wind turbine will increase the wind farm’s energy output and deliver even more affordable and sustainable renewable energy to the country,” said Gilan Sabatier, chief commercial officer for GE Vernova’s onshore wind business in International Markets.

Salvatore Vigorito, president of the IVPC Group said: “We are glad to open this new partnership with GEV and we envision a brilliant future together.”

GE is ramping its global onshore wind expansion amid flat growth in the US, where it continues to hold 63% of the 14GW pipeline.

CEO Scott Strazik told a conference 12 September he expects US onshore wind capacity additions this year and next in mid-single digit gigawatts, a “pretty small number,” and comparable to the disappointing 6.4GW in 2023.
The company is meanwhile downsizing its offshore wind business.
