Chinese wind turbine maker Windey said it has launched a 16MW floating wind power unit.

Windey announced the deployment at sea of the platform, called Seahawk, after “over a year of testing… optimising blade strength, and ensuring stable responses to wind changes”.

The OEM described the Seahawk as a “floating hybrid model with integrated “unit-foundation-mooring” control was developed for enhanced safety and reliability”.

The floater had been developed “with proprietary technologies, including lightweight blades, high-torque drivetrains, and advanced stability control for full-area coverage in high-wind environments”, said Windey.

The company joins Chinese peers such as Mingyang in developing floating technologies. Fellow Chinese manufacturer CRRC last year revealed plans for a 20MW floating model billed as the world's largest.

Windey was the number-two turbine OEM globally for orders in the first half of 2024, according to figures from Wood Mackenzie.

The Chinese player earlier this week unveiled plans for a 16MW onshore wind turbine that is among the world’s most powerful slated for development.
