The first of Chinese turbine-maker MingYang Smart Energy’s 99-metre-long blades for its 11MW offshore model has come out of the moulds at its Guangdong Shanwei fabrication facility.

The new ultra-long glass-carbon composite design, engineered for typhoon-class conditions – with wind speeds of 70 metres per second or 156 miles per hour – will be flown by the MySE11-203, on tract to be commercially available from 2022.

“This is China’s first 100-meter class ultra-long glass-carbon composite blade, incorporating a number of innovative technologies such as ultra-long blade design, glass-carbon composite materials, aerodynamic kit, and carbon fibre lightning protection system,” said the OEM in a LinkedIn post.

“It optimises power generation efficiency, turbine weight and cost while also providing a strong guarantee and support for high-quality and dependable performance throughout the wind turbine’s lifecycle.”

MingYang is among the Chinese OEMs leading the charge to catch-up with western turbine-makers GE, Siemens Gamesa and Vestas, all of which are developing 12MW-plus offshore models.
