MingYang Smart Energy (MYSE) hailed a “milestone” 1GW order for its 11MW wind turbine, one of a new breed of Chinese supersized machines that are soon likely to be challenging for business in Europe as well as at home.

The manufacturer said it will supply its MySE 11-230 typhoon-proof turbine to the 600MW Qingzhou 1 and 400MW Qingzhou 2 projects off Guangdong province, with the wind farms due in service by 2023 for operator Guangdong Electric Power Development.

The deal is the latest gigawatt-scale order in Chinese waters as the nation prepares to accelerate away from the UK as the world's largest market for offshore wind. Research group Wood Mackenzie recently increased its forecasts to predict an additional 88GW of new offshore wind in China's waters between 2021 and 2030.

"This milestone will greatly expedite the process of achieving grid-parity for China’s offshore wind market," said MYSE.

As well as advancing ambitions elsewhere in Asia, MYSE is one of a clutch of Chinese players getting ready to challenge incumbents such as Siemens Gamesa and Vestas in European waters.

The OEM has already secured a contract to equip Italy’s first offshore wind farm and signed a deal with the British government ahead of potential entry to the UK sector with a blade factory.

Since launching the 11MW model in July 2020, MYSE has gone further by unveiling plans for a 16MW turbine that is the largest unveiled so far globally.
