Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Sany has won its first orders in Western Europe, for small projects in Germany and Spain.

While the OEM is currently promoting its 7.8MW and 8MW models, adapted for European standards, at the Husum Wind exposition in northern Germany, it has scored the orders for its more established 5MW and 6MW machines.

The German order is for two SI-160-5.0 turbines with a 5MW rating, for an already permitted project, Sany’s Europe managing director Paulo Soares told Recharge.

If the project wins support in a tender, it could be installed as early as next year.

“It is signed for two turbines; theoretically, it could be extended for another three turbines,” Soares said at an interview during the Husum Wind exposition.

In Spain, the manufacturer earlier this year won an order for a single turbine project, and will supply one of its SI-172-625 models with a 6.25MW power rating.

The orders come after the OEM was granted a type certification for both models for international and German standards, Soares said.

Sany has been trying to break into the Western European wind turbine market for years. The company told Recharge two years ago – at an earlier Husum Wind exposition – that it plans to build a turbine factory in Europe, with Germany the prime candidate and Spain and Turkey other options. But it has not provided any update on this plan since then.
Sany’s small but significant breakthrough in two key Western European wind markets comes hot on the heels of Chinese rival Mingyang entering a partnership with British developer Octopus that the partners say could unlock gigawatts of clean power projects in the UK.
