Goldwind OKs $3bn plan to power green fuel export ambitions

Chinese OEM's latest plant would use 3GW of wind power and biomass gasification to produce 600,000 tonnes of green methanol and 400,000 of ammonia annually

Chinese wind turbine maker Goldwind is set to build a gigawatt-plus green hydrogen-based ammonia and methanol project in Inner Mongolia, China, after the plan was unanimously approved by its board of directors on Wednesday.

The 18.9bn-yuan ($2.7bn) project would see the installation of 3GW of wind power, of which more than 80% will be used to produce hydrogen, according to the company’s fillings.

This suggests that about 1.2GW of electrolysers would be required, although the capacity has not been revealed.

Goldwind does state, however, that the facility would produce 600,000 tonnes of green methanol and 400,000 of ammonia annually through biomass gasification coupled with green H2 in a facility that it plans to build in Bayannur municipality, Inner Mongolia.

Goldwind’s subsidiary company in Urad Middle Banner will file the application — tentatively called Urad Middle Banner 3GW wind-powered hydrogen-ammonia-methanol integrated project — and seek approval from the Bayannur municipal government.

The company, listed on both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen stock markets, will finance the project with its own capital and bank loans.

The output from the project is mainly targeted for export, but it is not clear which parts of the world Goldwind plans to target.

In November last year, Goldwind signed an offtake agreement with German shipowner Hapag-Lloyd to supply up to 250,000 tonnes of green methanol annually from a separate project in Inner Mongolia.

A year earlier, Goldwind had also secured a contract to supply 500,000 tonnes a year of clean methanol to shipping giant Maersk using a mix of biogenic and green H2-based molecules.
