British power giant SSE, one of the country’s largest wind farm developers, has named Martin Pibworth as its new CEO.

SSE today announced the appointment of its chief commercial officer Pibworth as its “chief executive designate”.

The appointment follows current CEO Alistair Phillips-Davies announcing his decision to retire from SSE in November. Pibworth will step into the CEO role after SSE’s annual general meeting in July.

Pibworth joined SSE in 1998 and has held various key commercial roles in the company over the last three decades.

As chief commercial officer, he has overseen SSE’s renewables subsidiary, SSE Renewables, as well as its thermal generation and other business units.

SSE Renewables is a co-developer of the 3.6GW Dogger Bank wind farm in the North Sea and is also developing the Berwick Bank project off Scotland, which has a whopping 4.1GW capacity.

"I'm excited to be leading SSE as the Company embarks on its next stage of evolution and growth,” said Pibworth. “As an integrated electricity group focused on the energy transition, we are well-placed for long-term growth from our established positions in networks, renewables and flexibility.”
