Gas leak claims life at Taiwan's Hai Long onshore substation
Two more workers remain in hospital after suspected carbon dioxide leak at onshore substation
The Hai Long Offshore Wind consortium has confirmed a fatality among a group of workers affected by a gas leak that occurred last week at an onshore substation under construction for a 1GW project in Taiwan.
A day after the incident, on 21 August, the consortium reported that ten of the affected workers has been discharged from hospital, with three more kept in hospital under observation and four described as hospitalised in a serious condition.
The Hai Long Project consortium issued another statement today in response to the fatality.
"We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the Hai Long Offshore Wind Project Changhua onshore substation site on August 20th. We extend our sincerest condolences to all the injured and their families, and we express our deepest sadness for the loss of life," the consortium said in a written statement.
"We will provide the necessary support to the families and kindly ask the public to respect their privacy, giving the families and the injured some space to get through this difficult time."
The causes of the incident are still under investigation.
In its statement Hai Long Project said the consortium members "remain committed to ensuring that all project staff have a safe and secure working environment in all our operations, with the aim of preventing similar incidents from happening again".
With offshore foundation installation currently ongoing, the Hai Long Project consoritium expects to begin off turbine installation in the second quarter of next year. Hai Long 2A and 2B are expected to be completed by the end of that year and the Hai Long 3 wind farm by 2026.
