What’s being billed as a first-of-a-kind high-level summit on renewable energy will be held later this year in New York.

The Global Renewables Summit will be held alongside the 79th UN General Assembly to bring key players from the public and private sectors around the table to help plot a path to tripling the world’s green power base by 2030.

The summit was launched by the Global Renewables Alliance – which includes key renewable sector bodies such as the Global Wind Energy Council and Global Solar Council – and Bloomberg Philanthropies, along with, among others, the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), International Energy Agency, presidencies of COP28 and 29 and the governments of Barbados and Kenya.

Tripling renewables by 2030 was one of the key objectives to emerge from the COP28 climate summit last year but the challenges remain formidable, not least in the shape of an estimated $12 trillion investment bill needed to hit 11TW of installed capacity.

Bruce Douglas, CEO of the Global Renewables Alliance, said the event from 23-25 September will seek to “ignite a worldwide race to the top, accelerating action on finance, permits, grids, and supply chains to unleash the full potential of renewable”, with a particular emphasis on emerging and developing markets.
